[ICON MAKING] Seven Laudato Si' Goals

Seven Laudato Si' Goals
The 7 Laudato Si' Goals is a project under the Vatican's Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development (DPIHD). I was tasked to create icons for each goal. This first batch of icons is the final result but I submitted this in 3 stages.
The Brief: Original logo
This is the original logo made by our Executive Director at Living Laudato Si' Philippines and I was told to draw inspiration from it. I assigned the colors to the goals based on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Stage 1. First batch of Icons
Since this was a rushed job, I was only given 3 days to work on it, I decided to take a shape from the original logo that I could use as a repeating element for every icon. I chose the petal since it was the main shape and each petal could represent the goals as part of the end goal represented by the flower.

Goal 1: Response to the Cry of the Earth
- The petal takes the shape of a teardrop, which is the earth.

Goal 2: Response to the Cry of the Poor
- The petal takes the shape of the mother and child. I wanted to show the human aspect behind "the poor".

Goal 3: Adoption of Simple Lifestyles
- I chose the bicycle as a symbol of this goal because it is one of the most memorable green lifestyle choice. The petal here takes the shape of the bicycle seat.

Goal 4: Ecological Education
- I chose an open book with a tree in the middle representing the ecological awareness that stems from this goal. Here the petal takes the shape of the tree leaves.

Goal 5: Ecological Spirituality
- The main imagery of this icon is a cross shaped like a plant. The petals make up the sides of the cross.

Goal 6: Ecological Economics
- I chose a pie chart to represent this goal as a nod to proper resource allocation. The petal takes the form of a leaf and a portion of the pie.

Goal 7: Community Engagement and Participatory Action
- I featured the entire flower and used it to connect people together.

Stage 2. Second batch of Icons
As it turns out, another local artist, Br. Tagoy Jakosaalem, created his own set of icons. They tasked me with combining our work together. The second stage is what came out of it. Overall, I decided to adopt his style of thicker icons because it looked more professional and distinguishable. I changed the font to match the new style.

Goal 1: Response to the Cry of the Earth
- I kept the original icon and just adjusted it to the more filled-in style.

Goal 2: Response to the Cry of the Poor
- A heart with a fish

Goal 3: Adoption of Simple Lifestyles
- A thumbs up with a flower to represent gardening

Goal 4: Ecological Education
- We had similar ideas here so I just adjusted it to the style.

Goal 5: Ecological Spirituality
- I wanted to keep the icon of the dove and added the petal cross to the heart of the dove

Goal 6: Ecological Economics
- I kept my original idea and just adjusted it to the style.

Goal 7: Community Engagement and Participatory Action
- The hands he made were a great idea so I added the connections on either end to further push the imagery of branching out from connections.
Stage 3. Final batch of Icons
They requested I follow the color palette of the Laudato Si' Action Platform that I made, which was more on the earth tones side, but keep the imagery.
